Adding to its recent announcement, Canopy is excited to announce its recognition as a Sample Vendor in the Data Breach Response category of the Gartner Hype Cycle for K-12 Education, 2023 (July 2023).
The need for data breach response technology is growing within the K-12 Education market. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a U.S. federal law that guarantees students and their parents a right to privacy of student education records, was passed in 1974 and has since been updated to address the growing threat that cyber attacks pose to privacy.
FERPA 34 CFR Part 99 requires prior written consent before educational institutions can disclose personally identifiable information (PII) from education records. While breach notification is not legally required by FERPA at this time, all 50 states have adopted broader (and increasingly stricter) breach notification requirements that encompass student PII. Further, schools are more frequently electing to notify their communities of breaches in order to maintain trust and allow impacted individuals to safeguard their data.
“We believe that the inclusion of a Data Breach Response category and mention of Canopy as a Sample Vendor on this Hype Cycle reflects the growing importance of safeguarding student data in the U.S.,” said Ralph Nickl, CEO and founder of Canopy. “To us, this recognition by the Gartner analysts shows that Canopy’s Data Breach Response software is a leading tool for identifying compromised PII and people following a cyber incident, enabling schools to alert impacted individuals quickly and comply with breach notification regulations.”
According to Gartner, “Gartner Hype Cycles provide a graphic representation of the maturity and adoption of technologies and applications, and how they are potentially relevant to solving real business problems and exploiting new opportunities. Gartner Hype Cycles are developed by expert analysts according to a common methodology.”* The Hype Cycles can help companies “separate hype from the real drivers of a technology’s commercial promise, reduce the risk of your technology investment decisions, and compare your understanding of a technology’s business value with the objectivity of experienced IT analysts.”*
In the Priority Matrix for this and the additional three Hype Cycles** where Canopy is mentioned as a Sample Vendor, the Data Breach Response category is predicted to reach mainstream adoption in less than two years with a high level of benefit.
