CanopyCo LLC, the data mining and breach review software developer, announced today that its flagship application, Canopy, has been instrumental in the identification of 12-million pieces of personally identifiable information (PII) within breached corporate data in the past year. The company’s machine-learning technology and AI-based methods were recently selected for the emerging tech showcase at the annual International Legal Technology Association conference, #ILTACON2019, in Orlando the week of August 19, 2019.

Canopy reduces the time, cost, and risk associated with identifying personally identifiable data, including PII, PHI, FERPA, PCI, CCPA, PIPEDA, HIPAA and GDPR data present in at-risk data. In partnership with Canopy, cyber forensics companies, cyber insurers, law firms and legal service providers can more quickly alert individual citizens when their identifying information may be at risk following a breach.

Since launching the company one year ago, Canopy has been brought in to assist with 40+ breaches per month and to scan more than 10 million breached documents for potentially compromised sensitive information. In the wake of cyber insurers reporting significant increases in business email compromises (see Beazley data reveals a 133% increase in business email compromise incidents from 2017 to 2018), the demand for Canopy’s machine learning platform has grown.

Two of Canopy’s executives bring lengthy backgrounds in the electronic discovery field. “Previously, eDiscovery software was leveraged for breach review, but now our clients have a purpose-built platform for responding to breach incidents,” said Ralph Nickl, CEO for Canopy. “As a result, our clients are able to immediately inform the enterprise of the severity of the breach, reduce the volume requiring human review, and accelerate the identification of the actual people who are affected.”

Canopy executives will present at #ILTACON19 on August 21, 2019 at 3:10pm (EST). Service providers are invited to stop by to see how the technology is helping professionals in the #cybersecurity, #dataprivacy and #legalIT fields.
